When advocates of a dog park project in the township came to the Board of Trustees for its blessing, they were relieved to find they weren’t barking up the wrong tree. The board unanimously approved a plan by the privately funded group, March 7, to build a dog park on three acres located next to the Black Creek Trail, west of Gale Road and directly across the street from the airport. Community activist Denice Wagner thanked the board for its support following a round of applause by the boardroom full of residents, many of whom brought their dogs to the meeting.

The Davison wrestling team advanced nine wrestlers to the individual state finals at the Palace of Auburn Hills last weekend and came away with one state champion and five All-State wrestlers. Freshman sensation Justin Oliver completed his initial campaign with a 53-0 record and his first state title at 112 lbs. Oliver opened the tournament with a fall over Lake Orion’s Charlie Highlen followed by a 14-5 decision over T.J. Fagan of Detroit Catholic Central.

Davison school officials believe the problems, the needs and the answers are the same. What may be different is the package. The board of education is expected to decide in the next month on whether to ask again for permission to borrow money for facilities improvements. If the answer is “yes” then the next step will be how to package the proposal(s). Monday’s school board meeting included a review of bond proposals which failed in December 1994 and March 1995.

The Davison Cardinal cagers made it a good fight but came up short against the Carman-Ainsworth Cavaliers, March 1, losing the Big Nine conference title match, 50-44. Spotting the Cavs a 15-0 lead in the first quarter, the Cards kept themselves within striking distance nearly the entire game, trailing by only three with a minute left.

Richfield Township’s dream of a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow fell apart Monday when State Racing Commissioner Leo Shirley ruled against permitting a racetrack there. Blair Kelly, owner of the farm on M-15 at Coldwater Road where the track was to be built, Tuesday told the Index: “The ruling is unjust and unfair. The Racing Commission advised us and led us on for three years. We have spent upward of $100,000 on the project. Now Shirley has rejected the plan without giving us a good reason or answer.” Richfield Supervisor Eldon Gleason pointed out the township would have got $275,000 a year in taxes plus percent of the gambling funds.

Complaints about Davison City police failure to enforce ordinances were aired by City Council members Monday night and a meeting with police officials was set for March 29.

The annual campaign for funds for the YMCA is on in Genesee County and Davison’s quota is $550, a little more than last year. Last year the quota was raised by 43 persons, most of them being persons of small capital, but with a fine appreciation for the fine work being done for the boys by the YMCA. We have two groups of boys here, one under the leadership of Ray Potter and the other headed by Charles Quadrie.
