Recall language filed against school board members

DAVISON — Recall language has been filed against Davison Board of Education members Karen Conover, Granger Stefanko and Holly Halabicky following the board’s May 15 decision to re-appoint former board member Diane Rhines.

Recall organizer Leonard Marden, a Richfield Township resident, said he filed the language in response to what he called the board’s disregard for voters wishes by reappointing a board member who was “rejected by voters” six months earlier.

Rhines was the incumbent board member who sought re-election in November of 2022 and lost.

A recall hearing will be held June 8 in Judge Jennie Barkey’s courtroom. The elections Commission of Barkey, Clerk Dominique Clemons and Treasurer Deb Cherry will determine whether the language is clear and factual.

The vote to appoint Rhines passed 4-2 with board members Matthew Smith and Alicia Hensley voting no.

Due to Michigan recall laws, Kurtis McMahan is not eligible for recall in the first year of elected office, Marden said. — G.G.
