FLUSHING — The Flushing Chamber of Commerce held its annual Awards Banquet last Thursday at Signature Chophouse in Flushing. The Chamber bestowed honors upon several of the Flushing area’s finest citizens who have excelled in their service to the community.
The evening also featured a transition of leadership within the Flushing Chamber of Commerce, as outgoing Chamber of Commerce President Mary Ann Cobleigh “passed the gavel” to incoming President Jacob Smith. Cobleigh, who will assume the position of Treasurer at the Chamber, received the 2018 President’s Award for her service to the Chamber.
Below is a complete list of 2018 Chamber of Commerce award recipients:
Citizen of the Year: Jacob Smith, designer at Starline Kitchen & Bath Gallery.
Business of the Year: Chemical Bank.
City Employee of the Year: Michelle King, Flushing City Clerk. King received her award at last month’s Flushing City Council meeting.
Township Employee of the Year: Officer James Hough and his K-9 Colt.
Flushing Chamber of Commerce Ambassador of the Year: David Mayers, DJ Mayers Computer Repair.
Educator of the Year: Shawn Andrews, physical education teacher at Flushing High School.
Veteran of the Year: Mike “Flagman” Bowen. John T. Howe, commander for Flushing American Legion Post #283, accepted the award in Bowen’s place at the Awards Banquet.
School Employee of the Year: Gene O’Kelly, security team leader at Flushing High School.
Community Spotlight Award: Flushing Community Schools—Student Leadership Organizations.
The Five Year Outstanding Service Award: Chamber Ambassador Jay Moldenhauer (not in attendance).
