GST Michigan Works proudly serving Veterans

LAPEER — For more than five years, Rick Tuckey has proudly served each veteran who walks through the front door at four GST Michigan Works! locations around the Thumb, offering a smile, a handshake and assistance with just about anything they need, from career assistance to computer literacy.

Though he’s been the veteran services liaison for nearly six years, Tuckey has been with GST Michigan Works! for the past 24 years, serving as a case manager as well and offering his assistance to individuals and families. Now, he says, he’s proud to be able to help the men and women who have fought for our country.

“I’ll tell you what, since I started in this position, it’s just been wonderful,” said Tuckey. “I’ve met so many fun people, it’s just a blast. I’m a people person, and this allowed me to meet all these new people. Now, I meet with veterans every day and I do whatever I can to help them. If they want help with a résumé, help with training, email, seasonal jobs – really just about anything they need, whatever arises, I’m here to help them.”

GST Michigan Works! serves the counties of Lapeer, Genesee, Huron, Tuscola, Sanilac and Shiawassee. GST offers on-the-job-training assistance to local employers to help them get workers up to speed on the skills they need to perform today’s jobs. GST Michigan Works! can make a difference in lives of area residents this year to improve their education, skillset and marketability to attain a better paying job in demand by local businesses and manufacturers. Tuckey explained that most veterans he meets with are surprised to learn about VA benefits or assistance that are owed to them after they complete their service with the military.

“We owe our veterans a debt of gratitude for their service to our country,” said Tuckey. “They deserve the best, and when they come in to see me, I might not be able to do everything, but I’ll do everything I can. I look back on the past five years and all the people I’ve helped and it makes me very proud to be able to help all these veterans.”

Along with helping veterans through career assistance, skillsets, marketability and VA benefits, GST Michigan Works! is also a sponsor for the first-ever Bowling in Bowties event hosted by View Newspaper Group on Saturday, Jan. 19 at Gerlach’s Bowling Center.
