MCC Fine Arts Gallery to host Cara O’Brien

FLINT — The Mott Community College (MCC) Fine Arts Gallery in the Visual Arts and Design Center will present an exhibition of sculpture by freelance artist Cara O’Brien titled Beautiful Decay. Her exhibition will be in the gallery from Oct. 15-30.

In addition, O’Brien will give a public presentation about her work Oct. 25 at 1 p.m. in the Visual Arts and Design Center, room 129.

Beautiful Decay is a collection of pieces that combine found wood, rusted metal and handmade porcelain. O’Brien explores ideas of new life created by erosion and decay. Her sculptural works transform static materials into works in which organic growth and change are the focus.

These events are made possible in part by the Ballenger Trust.

O’Brien is a freelance artist working and living in Whitehall, Michigan. She received a B.F.A., Magna cum Laude, Concentration: 3D, Minors: Marketing and Art History from Central Michigan University. Her education also includes International Studies under sculptor Jerome Cox, FS.C., M.F.A.,Viccio, Italy, and Mentored Instruction under artist and architect

Ray Jansma. She has exhibited extensively for many years including: the 90th Regional Exhibition, Muskegon Museum of Art; Slightly Obsessive, La Fontsee Galleries, Douglas, Michigan, and Artprize, Grand Rapids.

The Fine Arts Gallery is located in the Visual Arts and Design Center on the Mott Community College main campus in Flint. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Free and open to the public. For more information, call the Art and Design office at 810-762-0443. — G.G.
