Flushing Fire Department announces changes

FLUSHING — Flushing Firefighters Incorporated announced a retirement, new hire and promotions on Sunday. Bill Grimes is joining the team after passing his state certification to be a firefighter, according to a post on the organization’s Facebook page. Captain Nick Reitano, who served in the department for 13 years, is resigning from the department to focus full-time on his family and career. “Nick’s knowledge, dedication and personality will most definitely be missed,” said the post. Lieutenants Brett Beckley, Eric Reed and Tony Saborin all received promotions. — S.T.

Flushing Area Library book sale in May

FLUSHING — Friends of the Flushing Area Library’s Spring Book Sale is scheduled for May 3, 4 and 5. The sale will be held at the Senior Annex, during the following hours: May 3, 5:30-7:30 p.m. (Early Bird Sale for members only; $5 Friends membership may be purchased at the door); May 4, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. (Open to the public); and May 5, 9 a.m.- 3 p.m. ($2 bag sale all day). Flushing’s Mike Bowen Fundraiser

FLUSHING — Flushing resident Mike “Flagman” Bowen, part of the Shiawassee Harley Owners Group is raffling a 2018 Harley Davidson Street-Glide or $15,000 for individuals who do not wish to have a motorcycle. Tickets are $10 each or three for $20, and cash is encouraged. Partial-proceeds from the raffle will go toward Support MI Veterans. Bowen can deliver, mail or arrange a meeting for the tickets. Flushing Parks and Rec free trees for Arbor Day

FLUSHING — To celebrate this Arbor Day, Flushing Parks and Recreation are holding an Arbor Tree Giveaway on April 28 in Riverview Park. The first 100 people to show up at 2 p.m. will be taking home an Easter White Pine Tree. The trees are free, and all are planted in a five gallon bucket donated by Tractor Supply Company, according to the event’s information. Jacob Smith, a member of the committee, said they are still searching for sponsors. Sponsor forms can be found on the Flushing Parks and Recreation Facebook page. There are three options for local sponsors: a presenting sponsor, tree sponsor and support sponsor. — S.T.

Prescription drug take-back

ALL AREAS — A prescription drug takeback will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 28 at the Metro Police Authority headquarters on Hill 23 Drive, off Hill Road, and the Swartz Creek District office. — L.R.
