FLUSHING — The Flushing United Methodist Women’s Group is holding two annual benefit events over the next week: their Spring Rummage Sale and the second annual Underground Café.

The sale Friday, 10-6 p.m. and Saturday 9-12 a.m. Proceeds raised from the sale will go directly into the group’s general fund and are being donated to local missions to benefit women, children and youth. Communications Director Sue Ridge said all of the group’s events are centered on organizations dedicated to sheltering and aiding women.

President Lynne Whitmire said the group is hoping to turn the Underground Café into an annual night of food, socializing and live entertainment. Among the six acts who will perform include musician Jerry Jones, stand-up comedian Mike Hammond and singing group The Lofteez.

The event is next Wednesday, April 25, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Pre-show tickets are $8 and night-of are $10; all proceeds go to Restoration Place, a safe house for victims of human trafficking.

Whitmire said the turnout was promising. She has contacted local churches to spread the word and invites the public to join in on the fun.

“Last year, we had about 100 people who came and enjoyed an evening of entertainment,” said Whitmire.

The Flushing United Women’s Group is part of the International Women’s Group (IGW); an umbrella organization with smaller groups all over the world, including Africa and Europe. Whitmire said the Flushing women will be attending a conference in Ohio from May 17-20 to commemorate IGW’s 150th anniversary.

Flushing United Methodist Church is located at 413 E. Main Street. Details and tickets: 810-659-5172 or 810-874-2464.
