Flushing’s Cushman wins 2nd consecutive state title

Photo courtesy of Flushing Twitter DETROIT – Flushing’s Ben Cushman continued to dominate at 189 lbs. at the individual state finals that took place at Ford Field on Friday and Saturday. Cushman won his second consecutive state title at 189 lbs.

Cushman opened with a win by fall over Bryce Briggs of Caledonia and then defeated Brendin Yatooma of Detroit Catholic Central by a 16-4 major decision. In the semifinal, Cushman set aside Hiram Robinson of Roosevelt in a win by fall. Cushman then came out victorious in a 16-5 major decision against Traverse City West’s Jacob Ransom to take first place.

Treyton Gabold was also in action for the Raiders, wrestling at 103 lbs. Gabold lost his opening match against Crestwood’s Zein Bazzi by fall. Gabold then lost a 9-4 decision against Lakeview’s Evan Sheeders to be eliminated from the bracket.

At 215 lbs., Jeremy Parker lost his opening match against Brighton’s Luke Stanton by an 8-2 decision. Parker then defeated Landon Clark of Southfield High School for the Arts & Technology by a 7-3 decision. Parker was then knocked out of the bracket when he lost a 6-0 decision to Portage Central’s Dominick Wilson. — K.R. final match to win the state championship.

The Raiders rolled 200, 208, 229, 170, 178 238, 185 and 148 in the Baker games, respectively. In the regular Peterson games, Flushing bowled a 981 and 874, bringing its total pinfall to 3,411.

In the boys’ singles state championship, Flushing sophomore Nick Ducharme lost to Kalamazoo Loy Norrix’s Trevor Morgan 420-321 in the quarterfinals of the championship rounds. Matt Buck of Rockford won the individual state championship after defeating U-D Jesuit’s Ryan Reid in the final match.

Ducharme placed eighth overall in a field of 60 bowlers in the qualifying rounds. He rolled 194, 201, 199, 212, 203 and 200 respectively, finishing with a total pinfall of 1,209 to earn a spot in the top 16 and advance to the championship rounds. In the opening match, Ducharme defeated Flint Carman-Ainsworth’s Charles T. Hall III 403-343. Ducharme won the first game 204-156 and the second game 199-187. He was knocked from contention by Morgan in the succeeding round.

In the girls’ singles championship, sophomore Emily Reid placed 39th overall in a field of 60 bowlers. With a total pinfall of 1,063, Reid failed to qualify for the championship rounds, where Macomb Dakota’s Danielle McBride ultimately defeated Caledonia’s Macailin Rodriguez in the final match to secure the state title.

In her qualifying games, Reid rolled 166, 165, 194, 211, 190 and 137 respectively to finish with her 1,063 total. — J.O.
