ReMax Town & Country gives back

FLUSHING – In the spirit of charitable giving during the holidays, Re/Max Town & Country of Flushing decided to give back to two groups of individuals that they felt needed it the most – children and senior citizens. In order to figure out how to best serve the two groups, representatives from Re/Max contacted Flushing Middle School and Heartland Health Care Center, requesting ideas for giving.

“We strongly believe in giving back to the community that has given so much to us and shown us such incredible support through the years,” said Re/Max realtor Tammy Corbat. “We hope to have made a difference for these kids and seniors this season.”

Corbat and the rest of the team at Re/ Max said that they pooled their resources in order to fund the two donations. After finding out that students at Flushing Middle School were no longer able to receive a hot lunch once they had charged 20 lunches, they decided no student should have to go hungry. While it was surprising and alarming just how many students had accounts in arrears, they were able to pay off all of the accounts in full.

At Heartland Health Care Center, the residents have a Christmas Giving Tree each year, which had 30 names on it shortly before Christmas. Re/Max contacted Shaina Walther at Heartland, located on Sunnyside Drive, again looking for the best way to contribute. Walther explained that there were 30 long term patients, 15 of which had no family.

“We decided to take all 30 names from their Christmas Giving Tree,” said Corbat. “Patients were asked to choose which of 18 different choices, such as lap throws, housecoats, games, puzzle books, lip balm and candy, that they wanted or needed. We were able to create gift bags with three or more of their choices. Some seniors specifically asked for toothpaste or nice lotion - a good hint to those who are looking to donate to the home in the future.”

“Imagine someday being at a nursing home without any family members left,” continued Corbat. “We weren’t doing it for a pat on the back or for marketing, we were thinking more about the fact that many people may not think about this or even realize that these people will go without gifts during the holidays and we wanted to inspire others to give.” – By Alex Petrie
